About us

The Institute for Mechanical Process Engineering, founded in 1971 by Prof. Kurt Leschonski, was expanded in 1989 to include the Chair of Environmental Process Engineering held by Prof. Reiner Weichert. While Prof. Leschonski’s primary research interests lay in the field of powder technology involving coarser particles, Prof. Weichert focused a significant portion of his research on nanoscale particles.

Following Prof. Weichert’s retirement in 2005, Prof. Alfred Weber took over as director of the institute and continued the research in the field of nanoparticle technology. In particular, the processes for the gas-phase synthesis of functional nanoparticles, as well as the equipment for particle measurement in the nanometer range, were significantly expanded.

Since 2013, the editorial office of the *Journal of Aerosol Science* has also been located at the MVT.
