The Electrical Low Pressure Impactor (ELPI) is a cascade impactor. The particles are charged (depending on their size) via a corona charger. Once charged, these particles are separated at the various impactor stages according to their aerodynamic diameter. An electrometer with a resolution in the fA range is connected to each impactor stage, allowing the charge per impactor stage to be measured online. Since the particle charge is known for a given particle size, the particle size distribution can thus be analyzed directly online. Furthermore, the ELPI can also be used without a corona charger, which enables the measurement of the net charge per particle size class.
