Particle size distributions of suspended particulate materials can be determined using sedimentation analysis. For small particles, sedimentation is accelerated by a centrifuge. For larger particles, sedimentation can be reduced by using highly viscous liquids. Coagulation of particles can also be investigated if the particle density is less than 1 g/cm³.
